Tom Andrews, Ph.D.

Tom Andrews, Ph.D. Tom Andrews, Ph.D. has been in private practice in Rochester since 1979. He works with adults and couples. His clinical training in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy focuses both on stress management and relationship skills. His clinical approach involves coaching in recognizing and avoiding destructive patterns of thought, language, and behavior and in practicing positive patterns. He has extensive experience in working with anxiety disorders, including Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia. The strategies and tactics that are employed with anxiety disorders are supported by extensive clinical experience and research. Similar strategies and tactics are applied generally in work with patients/clients dealing with excessive, disruptive negative emotions, including also stress, worry, and anger. The overall aim is better management of inevitable negative emotions, especially when they are excessive, allowing for a more effective positive focus.

In working with individuals and couples on relationship problems, Dr. Andrews also focuses on coaching in recognizing and avoiding destructive patterns and on practicing more effective patterns. This relationship work often includes working on better managing one's own negative emotions, language, and behavior when provoked by others. Dr. Andrews also works with adults transitioning from divorce.

Dr. Andrews earned his Ph.D. (Clinical Psychology) from the University of Rochester. He earned his B.E.E. (Electrical Engineering) from North Carolina State University, his M.S.I.M. (Industrial Management) from Purdue University, and his Ph.D. (Philosophy) from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has worked as an electronics engineer and taught philosophy. He is married and lives with his wife in Fairport. They have a daughter in high school and a son in college.

Jane Dalton, Ph.D.

Jane Dalton, Ph.D. Jane Dalton, Ph.D. received her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from York University in Toronto. Dr. Dalton then came to Rochester to complete her Clinical Internship at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Following her Internship, Dr. Dalton returned to Toronto for a two-year University of Toronto Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Women’s Mental Health at Women’s College Hospital. She is now a licensed clinical psychologist in Canada and New York State.

Dr. Dalton works with older adolescents and adults. She treats individuals with a range of presenting problems including depressive disorders, anxiety disorders (Panic Disorder, Social Phobia, Agoraphobia, and PTSD), the sequelae of childhood abuse, life transitions, and adjustment disorders. In treating individuals Dr. Dalton draws from a variety of treatment models including insight orientated therapy, emotion focused therapy, relational approaches and cognitive behavioral therapy. Dr. Dalton also specializes in treating couples experiencing relationship/marital distress. Her approach to working with couples is also informed by her research on relationship satisfaction – most recently she developed a study to examine the effectiveness of Emotion Focused Couple Therapy for women with a history of childhood abuse. Emotion Focused Couple Therapy helps couples reduce conflicts and increase feelings of closeness by accessing emotions and unmet attachment needs.
